Dubna University has created a battery that halves heating costs

Artem Morzhukhin, a graduate student at Dubna State University, together with his team has created a new model of a thermal accumulator capable, according to his forecasts, of saving up to 50% of the costs of heating premises, the press center of the federal project “Platform of University Technological Entrepreneurship” reported. The device uses crystal hydrates – crystals containing water molecules.

“The modular heat accumulator, which was invented by Artem, is a set of compartments connected in series and filled with heat accumulating compounds based on crystallohydrates. The use of these substances makes it possible to make batteries much smaller than water batteries, which cool down faster in idle mode,” the press center noted.

Thermal accumulators are devices for storing heat: they can, for example, be heated from the mains at night if electricity is cheaper at this time. A variety of solid and liquid substances are used to fill the batteries, starting with plain water. Morzhukhin’s team experimentally came to the conclusion that it is the crystallohydrates that are most economical.

“Crystallohydrates are a mineral, a by-product of metal mining. They are cheap and are found in abundance. Our team has already patented six heat storage materials that work in different temperature conditions – from 35 to 80 degrees Celsius,” Morzhukhin said.

The battery is also compact in size and can be used for heating most buildings and premises.

The project team consists of 11 people, including students from several Moscow and Moscow region universities. The team has been testing prototypes for a long time to confirm theoretical calculations and optimal device settings. In the future, it is planned to organize the production of up to 120 batteries per month in the Dubna special economic zone.
