Comment by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, M.V.Zakharova, in connection with the decision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to suspend Russia’s representation in the Council of Europe

At an extraordinary meeting on February 25, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CMCE) voted to suspend Russia’s representation in this organization. The formal reason is the special military operation conducted by our country in Ukraine. In practice, this means that Russia has been deprived of the opportunity to participate in the work of the statutory bodies of the Council of Europe.

This openly politicized decision of the CMCE was another evidence that the Council of Europe has lost its independence, turned into an obedient tool of the Western bloc and its satellites, mired in double standards.

The Strasbourg-based organization claims to play a leading role in the protection of human rights on the continent. However, for eight years after the bloody coup d’etat in Ukraine, she has not found the strength to condemn the criminal policy of the nationalist Kiev regime, which carried out the genocide of the residents of Donbass. She preferred to turn a blind eye to the outrages of the Ukrainian punishers, who killed thousands of civilians.

When our country decided to put an end to these atrocities and stood up for its compatriots and citizens, the Council of Europe showed remarkable zeal and efficiency, joined the general chorus of denouncers of Russia.

Well, it’s not our choice. We will decide on our next steps in the near future. All responsibility for the destruction of the common legal and humanitarian space on the continent, for the inevitable harmful consequences for the Council of Europe itself, will be borne by those who inspired and supported this flawed decision. Without Russia, the Council of Europe will lose its pan-European identity, and eventually the meaning of existence.
