Comment by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry M.V.Zakharova on the results of the NATO summit

On February 25, a meeting of the leaders of NATO member countries took place in virtual mode. They demonstrated in every possible way their support for an “independent, peaceful and democratic” Ukraine– a country that, with the connivance of the West, turned into a hotbed of Nazi ideology.

Representatives of the alliance hypocritically stated that “the foundation of peace on the European continent has essentially been destroyed.” By whose hands is this done? Weren’t NATO countries silently watching as the United States was breaking up the ABM Treaty? They stood aside when Washington unilaterally withdrew from the INF Treaty. They allowed the Americans to refuse to participate in the DON, which devalued it as an effective mechanism for controlling military activities. Did NATO allies take part in the bombing of Yugoslavia, the attack on Libya, invaded Iraq? For 20 years, they brought the situation in Afghanistan to complete degradation, and fleeing from there, they left billions of dollars worth of weapons. Before calling Russia to account for the operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine, the countries of the North Atlantic bloc should answer for their military adventures, as well as for inaction in encouraging the Kiev regime to a peaceful settlement of the Donbass problem. For eight years, Western countries have been indifferently watching the murder and mockery of thousands of civilians in the South-East of Ukraine. In fact, they became accomplices of the long-term genocide of the inhabitants of the LPR and the DPR. NATO’s intention to continue pumping Ukraine with weapons, including air defense systems, says one thing – the United States and its allies are not interested in resolving the crisis situation in this country.

Lies and misinformation have become a familiar tool for the collective West, which in the early 1990s declared that NATO would not expand to the east. Since then, the alliance has included 14 states. The contingents of the bloc countries have approached our borders, posing a threat to our strategic facilities. In response to the alleged “threat” to NATO from Russia, the alliance has put into effect defense plans, starting to deploy units of the response forces on land, at sea and in the air. According to the Secretary General of the organization, Y.From the Barents Sea to the Mediterranean, more than 100 aircraft and 120 ships, including three aircraft carrier strike groups, are on high alert. Against this background, at least the claims that NATO is only a defensive bloc look strange.

At the same time, Russia’s attempts to start a dialogue on security guarantees for our country, to strengthen its defense capability on our territory are perceived by the alliance as aggressive behavior. They are trying to accuse Russia of repeatedly violating the Russia-NATO Founding Act of 1997. On the contrary, the alliance is building up its grouping and infrastructure near our borders. Conducts military development of neighboring countries with our country, using their resources to develop plans to contain Russia. We cannot ignore such a confrontational course towards our country. Especially when our key security concerns remain unanswered.

Given the non-negotiability of the NATO countries and their lack of desire for a real strengthening of security in Europe based on the principle of equal and indivisible security, we consider their attempts to accuse us of aggression groundless.
