February 17 marked 165 years since the establishment of Russian-Venezuelan interstate relations. On this day in 1857, the Emperor of Russia Alexander II sent a letter of reply to the President of the Republic of Venezuela, H.T. Monagas, recognizing the independence of the South American country.

On the occasion of the memorable date, congratulatory messages were exchanged between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela F.Placentia.

In his message, Sergey Lavrov noted that relations between Russia and Venezuela are based on a solid foundation of friendship and mutual sympathy between our peoples, and confirmed Russia’s readiness to stand shoulder to shoulder with Venezuela to actively resist attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of sovereign states.

In turn, F. Plasencia emphasized Russia’s important contribution to the activities of the Group of Friends in defense of the UN Charter, stressed the importance of joint work within the framework of the High-level Intergovernmental Russian-Venezuelan Commission, and also thanked the Russian side for its help in overcoming the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
