Motor transport drivers will be required to pay for transit through Azerbaijan, the APA news agency reports. The new law will apply to vehicles that have been registered abroad.

According to the information from the named source, the transport tax will appear after amendments to the Tax Code of Azerbaijan, which are currently being discussed by the relevant committee of the Milli Meclis on Economic Policy, Industries and Enterprising.

It is noted that the adoption of a new amendment to the Tax Code is connected with the desire to simplify the procedure for calculating road tax on vehicles crossing the country in transit. At the moment, this is a multi–stage procedure that takes into account many factors, which slows down the speed of work of border services.

IA Report describes the proposed upcoming change in legislation as follows: “According to the amendment to Article 209, the road tax will be paid by non-resident persons who are owners of vehicles entering the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan and using it for the transportation of passengers and cargo, as well as persons engaged in the production or import of gasoline, diesel fuel and liquefied natural gas on the territory of the country”.
