The Eurasian Economic Commission hosted a webinar on electronic commerce, which was attended by representatives of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
“We highly appreciate the expert assistance of international organizations participating in the event, provided to the Commission within the framework of memoranda of cooperation and mutual understanding. According to the agenda, we will have a practice-oriented and rich discussion. Its results will be used in the development of the law of the Eurasian Economic Union in the field of electronic commerce,” said Vladimir Serpikov, Director of the EEC Trade Policy Department, opening the meeting.
Presenting the work carried out in the Commission, Deputy Director of the Department of Customs, Tariff and Non-Tariff Regulation of the EEC Askat Bekov said that the annual growth of online commerce in the Union today is 20-25%, which is largely facilitated by the increase in the number of consumers of the Union purchasing goods on the Internet.
“In order to develop the existing potential of electronic commerce, the Commission has been carrying out extensive work since 2020 to create favorable conditions for the development of the industry in the EAEU space. One of the key directions of the roadmap adopted in November 2021 by the heads of government of the Union countries is the preparation of a draft international agreement with the subsequent adoption of a number of second–level acts,” he stressed.
Experts from UN organizations informed about the best international practices in such areas as consumer protection in e-commerce, competition development, use of electronic documents, as well as personal data protection.
