U-tapao Airport will become the base for the construction of a new aviation center, which the media have already managed to call an “Aviation metropolis,” Luxurylaunches wrote about this on Friday with reference to Reuters. The Thai government plans to allocate about 300 billion baht (or $9 billion) for the reconstruction of the Vietnam War facility.

U-Tapao International Airport is located in the Pla subdistrict of the Baanchang district in the province of Rayong.

It is noted that the author of the sketch of the future air hub was the international architectural and design company One Works. Its architects, when creating the project, were inspired by traditional fishing nets common in Rayong Province – the location of U-tapao.

The new airport will be located on 1040 hectares and will have a connection with the airports of Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi (the main airport of Thailand). In addition, a shopping area, flight training and maintenance centers, etc. will also be built in the “aviation city of the future”.

After the upgrade, U-tapao will be able to receive 60-75 million passengers a year. It is also planned that a new airport of this scale will provide jobs for about 15.6 thousand specialists.
