Interior Minister of Chile Carolina Toha spoke about the situation around forest fires on the eve of February 6. The National Disaster (SENAPRED) broadcast the speech of the head of the department on its YouTube channel. During the briefing, the Minister also reported on the number of deaths during the disaster.
“Today, the death of two people who were reported missing was confirmed. The total number of victims has reached 26,” TASS quoted Toha as saying. She also added that “In just five days, as much was covered by fire as usually burns in two years.”
Nevertheless, firefighters have managed to localize about 70 fires at the moment, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Chile noted.
SENAPRED published the first reports on national forest fires on January 23, 2023. A state of emergency in several regions of Chile (in Bio-Bio and Newble, later in Araucania) was declared on Friday. Now the area of the fire is more than 247 thousand hectares, more than a thousand residential buildings are not subject to restoration.
