The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is striving to modernize the country’s healthcare system to bring it in line with all international standards. Public health minister Qalandar Ebad stated this in an exclusive interview with ArianaNews on February 24. The head of the department also announced plans to build more than 200 new medical institutions across the country.

“Not only have we kept the former hospitals and clinics active, but we have also upgraded the hospitals and built new hospitals at the district and village levels,” he added.

Ebad also noted that Afghanistan has already been able to achieve success in improving the quality of medicine. Therefore, in the country over the previous year, cases of polio infection completely disappeared, as well as the maternal mortality rate significantly decreased.

“Maternal mortality rate has decreased a lot because the service has been standardized… I have said this many times that a department should be built for pregnant women in order to keep them and their children safe,” the minister stressed.

At the same time, Ebad acknowledged that there are barriers to improving the quality of services provided in the healthcare sector, but assured that the ministry is dealing with this issue.
