On March 15, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Compatriots Abroad of the Syrian Arab Republic Faisal Mikdad, who is part of the government delegation accompanying Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during his official visit to Moscow.

S.V. Lavrov and F.Miqdad held a confidential exchange of views on topical international and regional issues, noting the coincidence of assessments of the current state of international relations as a global clash of forces advocating sovereignty and equality of all states with the geopolitical hegemony of the “collective West”, which is beginning to lose its position in the modern world.

The Foreign ministers discussed in detail the development of the situation in and around Syria, with an emphasis on the need to promote a comprehensive political settlement based on ensuring the unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic. At the same time, the recent positive changes in the situation were noted with satisfaction, in particular, the process of restoring the multifaceted ties between Damascus and the leading Arab capitals, which is gaining momentum.

When considering a number of practical issues of increasing Russian-Syrian mutually beneficial cooperation, F.Mikdad expressed gratitude for Russia’s effective assistance in efforts to eliminate the consequences of the devastating earthquake in Syria.
