The Minister of Energy of Belarus Viktor Karankevich told whether the construction of the third power unit of the Belarusian NPP is planned. He told reporters about this on May 19. The head of the department also revealed the plans of the republic for the development of energy infrastructure.

The possibility of building a third power unit or a second nuclear power plant in Belarus will depend on a number of factors, the Energy Minister said Viktor Karankevich, BelTA reports. “The development of the Belarusian energy system facilities is connected with the indicators of the energy security concept and with meeting the demand for electric energy, therefore it is necessary to ensure a balance of supply and demand, that is, production and consumption of electric energy,” he explained.

Karankevich added that according to the materials that have already been prepared, there are good prospects for increasing electricity consumption in the country. “While working on this issue, we analyze the need to provide generation facilities, consider the construction of either a third power unit or a second nuclear power plant. Organizational, technical and environmental aspects are being worked out,” the minister said.

According to the head of the department, with the commissioning of the first Belarusian NPP consisting of two power units, more than 40% of the electricity demand in the country will be met. “The energy potential is increasing significantly, and this makes it possible in the medium term to meet the increasing demand for electricity from both the real sector of the economy and the population. But we are already looking further. This is 2030, 2035, 2040, 2050, this is a long-term perspective. We are making the appropriate calculations,” Karankevich stressed.

Recall that the official launch of the first power unit of the Belarusian NPP took place on November 7, 2020. Minsk stressed that by June 2022, the launch of the first unit of the station allowed the republic to save more than $390 million or 1 billion bel. rub. The second unit of the station was launched in April of this year. Through the united energy market of the Union State, Belarus will be able to supply electricity to Russia and the EAEU countries, which will allow it to compensate for losses from the withdrawal of the Baltic countries from the BRALL energy ring in 2025. Earlier, the government had already allowed the expansion of the station.
