The Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin, within the framework of the working visit of the Russian delegation to Pyongyang to participate in the 10th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, held a meeting with the Minister of Physical Culture and Sports of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Kim Il Guk. The parties discussed the development of bilateral cooperation and signed a Plan of sports events for 2024-2026.

Oleg Matytsin thanked his colleague for his speech at the plenary session of the forum “Russia is a sports power” and noted the importance of further strengthening sports ties. “Our friendly and partnership relations are implemented on the basis of agreements between the leaders of our countries – President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Chairman of State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Kim Jong Un. Sport plays a unifying role and should remain a bridge of friendship between peoples, be free from any forms of external pressure,” Oleg Matytsin stressed.

The head of the Russian sports department spoke about the implementation of the signed plan of sports events. “The document includes cooperation in 12 sports, organization of joint events in the field of sports science and medicine, training and advanced training of specialized personnel. The initiative of the Russian side was the inclusion in the plan for the creation of the Taekwondo Academy of the ITF named after General Choi Hong Hee on the basis of the Russian University of Sports. The Far Eastern Academy of Physical Culture expressed its readiness to accept Korean applicants for the organization of training and retraining of specialists in the sports field. We are ready to expand cooperation in the export of Russian sporting goods and equipment. We are waiting for the DPRK sports delegations in Russia to participate in the upcoming competitions,” Oleg Matytsin added.

Kim Il Guk stressed the need for regular updating of the plan. “We are in similar circumstances within the framework of sanctions pressure – both our and your athletes are experiencing difficulties due to discriminatory restrictions. This year’s Asian Games were the first for us after a long break. We have successfully performed in shooting, wrestling, gymnastics, and set six world records in weightlifting. We hope for the development of sports cooperation between Russia and the DPRK, including in the framework of mutual exchanges between federations in certain sports. To the extent possible, we will participate in the listed competitions at the invitation of the Russian side. I am convinced that it is important not only to sign the plan, but also to regularly monitor the progress of its implementation and, if necessary, update its content. We will strengthen the Russian-Korean friendship through joint efforts,” said the Minister of Physical Culture and Sports of the DPRK.

The plan for the development of sports cooperation between the sports departments of the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for 2024-2026 was signed as part of the implementation of the Agreement between the Governments of the two countries on Cultural Cooperation signed in Pyongyang on December 26, 1996. The plan includes training and sports events in 12 sports: taekwondo, judo, boxing, wrestling, football, table tennis, weightlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming, figure skating, basketball, volleyball. The document also provides for measures to deepen cooperation in the field of sports science, establish direct contacts and develop cooperation between sports federations, as well as sports universities in Russia and the DPRK.
