35 mass media and blogs from 26 regions of the country received awards of the jubilee XV All-Russian competition “SMIrotvorets”.
Acceptance of works for the XV All-Russian competition of mass media “SMIrotvorets” for the best coverage of issues of interethnic and ethno-confessional relations began on May 15, 2023. 1058 media from all federal districts of Russia competed in the competition this year. The Expert Council reviewed over 10,000 materials. The shortlist of the competition included 136 media and blogs. The jury selected 35 winners from them. The jury consists of editors of leading mass media, representatives of the scientific community and the educational sphere, authorities, professional public associations, national autonomies. The jury in the category “Federal and regional Media” is headed by Igor Barinov, Head of the Federal Agency for Nationalities Affairs, in the category “Ethnic and Local Media” – Margarita Lyange, President of the Guild of Interethnic Journalism.
The final events of the competition were held in Moscow for three days. On the morning of November 27, representatives of the media and winning blogs traditionally took a walk around Moscow multinational. And then the business program began with a press conference in TASS. In the leading news agency of Russia, the jury members told about the history of the contest, which celebrated its 15th anniversary.
The press conference also discussed trends in the changing information space, challenges and threats that accompany this process. The Public Chamber of the Russian Federation provided its halls for the exchange of best practices of regional and federal media in the field of interethnic relations. “This part of the competition is very important, long–awaited and, perhaps, the most useful,” says Margarita LIANGE, who held a seminar with the laureates.
The finalists also attended a lecture by Olga Smirnova, Head of the Department of Digital Journalism at the Faculty of Journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University. On November 28, journalists and bloggers took part in the discussions of the VII Media Forum of Ethnic and Regional Media, which was held in the Petrovsky Travel Palace.
The solemn ceremony of awarding the winners took place in the evening of the same day in Moscow, at the Izvestia Hall concert hall. Tatiana Vagina, Head of the Department of National Policy of the Office of the President of the Russian Federation for Internal Policy, read from the stage a greeting to the participants of the competition from Russian President Vladimir Putin. He stressed that the “Peacemaker” fulfills an important mission – it serves to strengthen the creative information potential of federal and regional mass media, to increase their role in the competent, responsible coverage of such key, truly strategic issues as the preservation of ethnic and cultural diversity in our country, the improvement of interethnic and interreligious relations, the establishment in society, especially among young people, unshakable spiritually- moral patriotic ideals and values. Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, also sent greetings to the participants.
Only at the award ceremony, together with the audience, the finalists learned how the prizes were distributed in the categories “Print”, “Internet”, “Television”, “Ethnosound”, “Children’s and Youth Media”, “Multimedia Generation”, “Blogs”, “Mentors and Traditions”. This year, the peace makers were congratulated by the finalists of the musical project “Sound of Eurasia”, performing modern ethnics: multi-instrumentalist Marat Taturas and the Uzoritsa group from Bashkortostan, singer Natalia Dziga from the Moscow region, the throat singing ensemble “AltayKai” from the Altai Republic and the Sokol group from Moscow. On November 29, at the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, the finalists of the competition became participants in the summing up and closing of the Ethnic and Regional Media Forum “Ethnic factor: Vulnerability or Advantage”.
