Russian leader Vladimir Putin congratulated Cyril Ramaphosa on his re-election as President of South Africa following the general elections held on 29 May.

The parties expressed hope for the continuation of joint work on further comprehensive strengthening of strategic partnership. This is reported by the press service of the Kremlin.

Earlier, the South African parliament re-elected the leader of the African National Congress (ANC) party Cyril Ramaphosa as president of the country. He received 283 votes. On 29 May, general elections to the National Assembly (lower house of parliament) were held in South Africa. The ANC won 159 seats out of 400.

General elections are held in South Africa every five years. The party that wins the election then appoints its leader as the country’s president.
