Farmers in West Guji zone of Ethiopia’s Oromia region are actively expanding plantations of high yielding coffee varieties.

He noted that farmers are replacing old coffee plants with higher yielding ones after learning new skills. These new coffee varieties mature in one year and eight months and provide 12 quintals of produce per hectare, which is much higher than traditional varieties.

The West Guji zone provides 28 per cent of the national coffee supply. According to a report by the Oromia Agricultural Bureau, about 2.6 billion coffee plants and 350,000 hectares of land for coffee nurseries have been prepared as part of a major coffee initiative this year. The region plans to harvest 12 million quintals of coffee already this year.
