The meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was held on July 4 in Astana.
The leaders of the SCO countries discussed issues of further improving the work of the integration association in order to strengthen and deepen multilateral cooperation in the new conditions, considered relevant international and regional topics.
More than two dozen different decisions and statements were made, including those related to the initiative “On World Unity for Just Peace and Harmony”, the draft SCO development strategy until 2035, improving the organization’s activities, cooperation in economic development, investment, finance and energy, in the field of ecology and environmental protection, information security as well as in the areas of countering terrorism and extremism, and combating drug trafficking.
The decision to expand the SCO membership was a historic event. Belarus has been admitted to the organization as a full member and is now the tenth country in this status.
The representative of Kazakhstan, Nurlan Yermekbayev, was appointed Secretary General of the SCO for the period from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2027.
Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Independent States Sergey Lebedev took part in the first SCO+ forum.
