This year, three new stations will appear on the map of the Minsk metro: Aerodromnaya, Nemorshansky Sad and Slutsky Gostinets. And in the south of Minsk there is a new electric depot – Slutsk. And the new Minsk-2024 trains will run along the Zelenoluzhskaya subway line. This is a joint Belarusian-Russian project that is being implemented in Mytishchi near Moscow.
The Russian company Metrovagonmash has launched the production of new subway cars for the needs of the Minsk metro. The assembly of the first train will be completed in a few days, and it will go to the consumer. Importantly, the novelty is completely import-independent.
Both Russian and Belarusian components are in the new cars for the Minsk metro. And reliable and proven partners over the years will not let you down.
On the eve of sending the first train to Minsk, our correspondent visited the Mytishchi car builders.
Metrovagonmash is one of the leading Russian enterprises operating in the field of transport engineering. It is also the largest manufacturer of subway cars. The plant has produced more than 10,000 metro cars for 11 countries, including Belarus.
The Minsk Metro and Metrovagonmash are connected by a history of cooperation that dates back to the opening of the capital’s subway in 1984. Currently, more than 200 wagons produced by Metrovagonmash, the first partner of the Minsk subway, are in operation in the Minsk metro.
In March 2023, the Belarusian delegation paid a working visit to the enterprise. Representatives of the Minsk City Executive Committee and the Moscow metro visited the production site, discussed the conditions for the creation of trains and signed a contract for the supply of 28 new modern subway cars for the Belarusian subway. Of these, it is planned to form seven four-car electric trains that will carry passengers after the commissioning of the second section of the Zelenoluzhskaya line. The new metro trains have been named “Minsk-2024″. Seven four-car electric trains will be delivered to the customer by the end of the year.
– The wagons meet all modern requirements of comfort and safety and demonstrate high demand in international markets. Large shipments have been delivered to the Baku and Tashkent subways, and now Minsk will be added to them,” said Andrey Stepnov, General Director of Metrovagonmash. – The Minsk version will retain all the advantages relevant to the series: through passages, wide doorways, air conditioning units with air disinfection, convenient interior layout.

The correspondent of SOYUZ assessed the innovations from the point of view of passengers and the driver. The rolling stock was provided with reliable noise and thermal insulation, modern asynchronous traction drive. The interior uses a unique design. For the first time, the entrance to the cabin is accessible using an individual card, and there are significantly fewer different buttons on the control panel – large-format touch monitors have appeared. The exterior is also unique. The livery of the new train is made in blue and white tones.
The trains were designed for operation on the Zelenoluzhskaya line of the Minsk Metro, where platform doors are used. To support synchronization with them, the wagons were modified accordingly: they were retrofitted with an auto guidance and synchronization system with platform doors, a security system, and an updated driver’s console.

One of the features is the length of the composition. It had to be shortened by seven centimeters on each side due to the length of the platform of the new subway lines.
Safety is another important requirement. Therefore, there will be at least four digital video surveillance cameras in the cabin. Blind spots are not allowed.
– There is a synchronous traction drive here, that is, the wagons began to ride more smoothly, – said Roman Bogatyrev, Deputy Director of Production at Metrovagonmash-Service LLC. – Noise insulation allows passengers to listen to music or read books. There is also an interactive map that will tell a person how to optimally get to a particular station.
Less than a year has passed since the signing of the contract before the start of production. Moreover, the manufacturer spent most of his time on engineering work.
200 wagons produced by the Russian Metrovagonmash are currently being operated in the metro of the Belarusian capital.
– In all projects, we use only our own developments, including key components such as high-tech traction electric machines, static converters, microprocessor control systems, – Yuri Orlov, General Designer of TMH Engineering LLC, clarified an important point.
The enterprises of the Russian Transmashholding (TMH) are traditionally suppliers of equipment and components for the railway industry and the industrial sector of Belarus. Cooperation is also developing within the framework of the technological development strategy of the Union State until 2035, aimed at strengthening the technological independence of Russia and Belarus. Over the past five years, the total amount of supplies of equipment, components and services has exceeded 6 billion Russian rubles.
– The new wagons turned out to be energy efficient, – said Alexey Zhmak, director of the separate TMH Engineering division in Mytishchi. – They have high dynamics. It is possible to use regenerative braking. There is also an auto-driving system, which allows operating rolling stock together with the infrastructure of the Minsk Metro. The trolley designs use air suspension technology, which gives a smooth ride. The driver’s console has been completely redesigned.
In cooperation with Belarusian partners, Metrovagonmash has almost completely eliminated the need for components for the production of trains.
– The Minsk train is import-substituted, – Alexey Zhmak makes an important emphasis. – In particular, the security system in the new wagons is Belarusian. Also vibration dampers, water-oil and air heat exchangers, light lines and much more of domestic production.
