On July 8, 2024, a Forum of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization countries on “Green” Development was held in Qingdao (Shandong Province, China).
The event was organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China in cooperation with the SCO Secretariat, the Chinese Committee for Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation of the SCO, the People’s Government of Shandong Province.
Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a welcome message to the participants, which was read out by Shen Yueyue, Deputy Chairman of the National Committee of the People’s Political Consultative Council, Chairman of the Chinese Committee on Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation of the SCO. She also delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Forum.
The event was attended by the leaders of Iran, Myanmar and Azerbaijan, heads of relevant departments of the SCO member states and dialogue partners, including Belarus, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Cambodia, Maldives, UAE. Diplomats, scientists, representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme and other international organizations were also present.
In his speech, SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming thanked the Chinese President for his attention to the Forum, stressed the importance of deepening cooperation in the field of ecology and environmental protection between the SCO countries, explained the Organization’s approaches to creating a “green” environment, forming a healthy lifestyle and ensuring sustainable development in the region. He also highlighted the results achieved within the framework of the SCO Year of Ecology 2024 and other mechanisms, and called on all parties to further strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation and contribute to healthy, stable and sustainable development.
The Forum was the first large-scale event held under the chairmanship of China in the SCO. During it, the initiative “Building a green partnership for sustainable development” was put forward.
Three subsidiary forums were organized, where participants exchanged views on topics such as “The SCO Year of Ecology 2024”, “Technological innovations to expand opportunities for green and high-quality development” and “Climate action for green low-carbon transformation”.
