On July 22-24, the ninth plenary session of the BRICS Working Group on Counterterrorism (RGAT) was held under the Russian chairmanship. The meeting was preceded by meetings of subgroups of expert practitioners working to deepen the practical interaction of the association’s participants on topical aspects of the counter-terrorism agenda.

Sergey Vershinin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, addressed the participants of the events, who stressed the desire of the Russian presidency to promote a unifying agenda based on the coinciding approaches of the BRICS countries in the field of combating terrorism.

The intensive discussions took place in an interested, constructive manner. The delegations exchanged substantive assessments of current terrorist threats on a global and regional scale, discussed cooperation in the field of countering money laundering and terrorist financing, the spread of radical ideology and the use of the Internet for illegal purposes, and curbing the activity of foreign terrorist fighters.

The key outcome of the meetings was the approval of the position document of the WGAT, which reflects the role and place of the Group in the international anti-terrorist architecture for the coming years. In addition, it contains a number of recommendations for the further development of relevant cooperation, including at the UN site.

The meetings were held in the spirit of a trusting dialogue and contributed to strengthening partnership in the anti-terrorism area in the BRICS format.
