A musical performance based on the famous novel by Leo Tolstoy took place from October 2 to 4 at the Beijing Performing Arts Center. The show is timed to celebrate the Day of the Formation of the People’s Republic of China, Xinhua News Agency, a partner of the TV BRICS network, reports.

The authors of the libretto and music were Julius Kim and Roman Ignatiev. The role of Anna Karenina was played by actress Anfisa Kirillina. The actress expressed her joy at returning to the Chinese stage. She also recalled the great success of her previous tours in China.

“Full houses throughout the tour and huge queues for autographs,” she shared.

As the soloist clarified, the performance was subtitled, as the actors performed the roles in Russian. According to her, even those who do not speak the language claimed that they were so impressed by the music and the game that they felt as if they fully understood what was happening and enjoyed the performance.

“It is a great happiness that we are friends and maintain such cultural ties. We have great respect for each other’s culture,” Kirillina added.

Li Yiwen, a resident of the Chinese capital, who came to meet with the actors, stressed that “Anna Karenina” conquered her from the first viewing thanks to the unique Russian elements, rare for theatrical productions in China.

By decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, 2024 and 2025 have been declared the Cross-Cultural Years of Russia and China. As Xinhua notes, Russian art has been actively promoted in China recently. So, in early September, theatrical productions based on the work of Leo Tolstoy “War and Peace” were shown in Beijing.
