The Association of Rating Compilers (ASR) has presented the first pilot version of the BRICS university ranking, which includes 600 educational institutions from ten countries: Brazil, Egypt, India, Iran, China, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and South Africa.

Peking University became the leader of the list, followed by Lomonosov Moscow State University and Tsinghua University in China.

China took the first place in the number of universities represented – 207 educational institutions. Russia took the second position with 161 universities, and India took the third place (93 universities). The top five also included Brazil with 55 universities and Iran, represented by 27 educational institutions.

According to Dmitry Grishankov, Director General of the ASR, the rating was compiled taking into account the peculiarities of the BRICS countries, and its methodology is based on the model of the international rating “Three University Missions”. In the evaluation process, special attention was paid to the results of students at international Olympiads, while the financial performance of universities played a less significant role. For the first time, a criterion reflecting the level of scientific cooperation with colleagues from the BRICS countries was also introduced.

The idea of creating a rating was first put forward by South Africa in 2023 and was approved at a meeting of BRICS education ministers. In 2024, it was decided to hold regular seminars on academic leadership in Kazan with the participation of representatives of the countries of the association.
