The settlement of Abo Nokhta in the historical Tabab in the Asir administrative district in southwestern Saudi Arabia has been recognized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as one of the best tourist villages of 2024. This is reported by Arab News.
This place was included in the list of 54 villages from around the world as “rural communities shaping the future of sustainable tourism”. It is noted that the settlement was noted for its rich cultural heritage, including ancient castles and forts, as well as for its commitment to environmentally friendly restoration methods. According to the publication, recycled materials are used to restore buildings there.
“Using their unique resources, these settlements contribute to economic growth, promote local traditions and improve the quality of life of their residents,” said UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili.
In addition, the Abo Nokhta community is known for its ancient agricultural traditions. It is engaged in the cultivation of wheat, corn, fruits and vegetables, and also successfully develops traditional methods of cattle breeding. To preserve seeds in the village, the Al-Mdafin method is used – the creation of stone storages that provide optimal conditions for their storage.
The “Best Tourist Village” initiative attracted 260 applications from 60 countries around the world. It is part of the World Tourism Organization’s rural development program. The development of villages is assessed according to a number of criteria, including natural resources, preservation of cultural heritage, infrastructure and accessibility, economic sustainability and others.
