On November 22, solemn events dedicated to the launch of the Second Arctic Circumnavigation Expedition in Brazil took place in the port of the Brazilian city of Rio Grande (Rio Grande do Sul state) on board the scientific research vessel Akademik Treshnikov. The events were attended by the Honorary Consul of Russia in the state of Rio Grande do Sul J.A. Zabolotsky.
After the launch ceremony of the expedition, J.A. Zabolotsky held a meeting with the ship’s captain D.A.Karpenko and Vice-rector of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul J.Russian Russian Ambassador, during which he told them about the life of the Russian community in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the promotion of the Russian language and culture, presented the book “Russian Immigration in Brazil”, and also gave an interview to the Brazilian media (TV Mar de Rio Grande).
On the occasion of the launch of the Second Arctic Circumnavigation Expedition, the Globo television channel made a special report. Information about the start of the expedition was also published in leading Brazilian (Folha de Sao Paulo, Valor Economico, Estadao, Correio do Povo) and Russian publications (Rossiyskaya Gazeta, RIA Novosti).
The AANI research vessel Akademik Treshnikov has taken on board more than 60 scientists from Russia, Brazil, Argentina, China, Chile, India and Peru, who will work together for about two months studying the natural environment of Antarctica. On the way around Antarctica, the Akademik Treshnikov NPP will visit coastal stations in India, China and Russia.
The Russian-Brazilian project is being organized by the team of the Polar and Climate Center of the Institute of Geosciences of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AANI, St. Petersburg).
