It is planned to develop cooperation in the field of study, use, protection and monitoring of groundwater in the Commonwealth of Independent States. The relevant Program for the period up to 2030 and the Action Plan for its implementation were adopted at a meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the CIS on December 12 in Moscow.
Groundwater is a strategic type of water resources, as, in fact, it is the only reliable source of drinking water for the population during natural and man-made emergencies.
On a global scale, groundwater exploitation covers about 50% of the need for drinking water, 20% of the need for agriculture and 40% of the needs of various industries.
The program and the Action Plan for its implementation have been developed to create conditions for sustainable development and dynamic interaction of the CIS member states in the field of groundwater research and protection, exchange of open data and knowledge about them, monitoring of transboundary groundwater bodies, assistance to the development of human resources, education and training in the field of hydrogeology.
The implementation of the documents will contribute to improving the efficiency of the use of groundwater resources, ensuring the water safety of citizens and society, including improving the safety of the population and territories from natural and man-made emergencies, improving legal regulation in this area, introducing best practices in the management of groundwater resources, creating mutual benefits of a transboundary nature and enhancing cooperation on the principles of partnership.
