In East Africa, tests were successfully conducted on the transmission of electricity from Kenya to Tanzania, which was an important step in the implementation of the East African Electric Highway project. The creation of a fully integrated regional energy grid began earlier with the launch of an energy exchange between Ethiopia and Kenya, writes DNE Africa, a partner of the TV BRICS network.
The main goal of this initiative is to provide reliable, affordable and renewable energy to the entire region. It is expected that this will not only contribute to strengthening regional cooperation, but also to the economic growth of the participating countries.
The publication emphasizes that Ethiopia, which has rich reserves of wind, solar and geothermal energy, is ready to become a key player in the regional energy market. Over the next ten years, the country will be able to generate up to 60,000 terawatt-hours of electricity to meet the growing demand both domestically and in neighboring regions.
It is noted that Ethiopia’s cooperation with Kenya and Tanzania in the energy sector confirms the strategic role of the republic in shaping the energy potential of East Africa. According to forecasts, the export of green electricity will bring Ethiopia up to 200 million US dollars per year (20.3 billion rubles), strengthening the economy and stimulating sustainable development.
