From January 1, 2025, the BRICS presidency will officially pass from Russia to Brazil. During this period, special attention will be paid to issues of climate change, sustainable development and regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). This was announced by Eduardo Pais Saboya, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic for the Asia-Pacific region, the country’s sherpa in BRICS, in an interview with Agência Brasil.

He noted that the issues discussed earlier, including the use of national currencies in trade between countries and the reform of the global governance system, will remain on the agenda.

Saboya explained that the climate issue is of particular interest, since this year Brazil will host the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in Belém. He drew attention to the fact that the top Ten countries play a key role in the energy sector, which affects greenhouse gas emissions.

Regulation of artificial intelligence will also become one of the central issues during the presidency.

“There is currently no artificial intelligence management in the world, although discussions on this issue are already underway. It is possible that during Brazil’s presidency it will be possible to promote the idea of a unified approach of the group’s countries to AI regulation,” said a representative of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.

Speaking about the expansion of the BRICS, Saboya stressed that Brazil supports the inclusion of new members in the group. According to him, the country’s leadership intends to ensure their smooth integration into the union. In addition, the diplomat commented on the creation of the category of BRICS partner countries.

Earlier, the press service of the administration of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also published the BRICS logo, under which the republic’s presidency in the “ten” will take place. It depicts a sumauma cotton tree growing in the Amazon, painted in the colors of the national flags of the member States of the group.

It is noted that a tree with a branched root system and a blossoming crown in the form of triangles of yellow, red, orange, green and blue symbolizes the “fortress of the union” between the members of the association.

Brazil will host the BRICS summit for the fourth time in 2025. Last year, the summit was held in Kazan, Russia.
