Indonesia joined the BRICS as a full member. This is reported on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.
“As part of Brazil’s interim BRICS presidency, which began on January 1 and will last until December 31, 2025, the Government of the country announced today, January 6, the official accession of the Republic of Indonesia to the BRICS as a full participant,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It is noted that Indonesia’s candidacy was approved by the leaders of the group’s states during the summit in Johannesburg in August 2023. However, due to the presidential elections, the country has indicated its interest in joining the BRICS after the formation of a new government.
The ministry’s statement also said that Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia by population. In addition, the republic supports the reform of global governance institutions together with other BRICS members.
The Brazilian leadership and the Chinese Foreign Ministry congratulated Indonesia on joining the association.
“Indonesia’s formal accession to the BRICS is in the common interests of the group and the states of the global South, and we are confident that the country will make a significant contribution to the development of the BRICS,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on its website.
Earlier, Eduardo Pais Saboya, head of the Secretariat for the Asia-Pacific Region of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country’s BRICS sherpa, said that the Brazilian government supports the inclusion of new participants in the group. In addition, in December it became known that Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan joined the association as partner countries.
