Briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, Moscow, January 16, 2025

Marat Shakirzyanov, Editor-in-Chief of the Online publication “Embassy Life”:

You started the briefing with information about our deceased Russian journalist. I would like to return to this topic. One of the directions of the association “Humanity within War” (Italy) is to preserve the memory of fallen journalists all over the world. To date, this Association, headed by Professor Paolo Pascolo, has erected a monument to the dead journalists in Gorizia. It was planned to create a Golden Book of Memory.

They have begun to create a Memorial Book, which will be kept by the Church of the Queen of Peace (Chiesa della Regina Mundi), dedicated to mothers who lost their sons in military events. Accordingly, the request of the Italian side for assistance in obtaining a list of Russian journalists who have died since 1990.

Maria Zakharova :

We will do everything to provide you with such data. Although they have already been voiced more than once. But I understand perfectly well that we need some kind of complete generalized list. We will definitely connect you with experts dealing with this topic, and with the Union of Journalists of Russia, Moscow. For our part, we will definitely provide assistance.

Thank you for moderating this wonderful, sad, but very important initiative.

Marat Shakirzyanov, Editor-in-Chief of the Online publication “Embassy Life”:

It is carried out within the framework of the international project “Humanism. The reliability of information through the eyes of journalists.”

Maria Zakharova :

It seems to me that our country has suffered more than others. At first, we were endlessly criticized for no reason, for the fact that we have “wrong” working conditions for journalists, “wrong” legislation, and “wrong” investigations of situations related to the safety of journalists. Then, as if on cue, they took the opposite position towards our country – covering up and “not seeing” what was happening around the deliberate destruction of Russian correspondents and media representatives during terrorist attacks and sabotage.

This is a “double blow” that we have received from the “collective West” in a limited time. To have lived both in twenty years is a telling story. Who among the descendants will read about it, is unlikely to believe that such a thing was possible.

I remember perfectly well how ten years ago, on international platforms, Western representatives shouted at the Russian delegates with foam at their mouths: they say, why is a domestic brawl involving a journalist not being investigated? Although he was not fulfilling his professional duties at the time. And he was just an ordinary citizen like everyone else. At the same time, the reports listed cases of real attacks on journalists, as well as domestic and administrative cases that are typical for the life of any society.

But when the deliberate, targeted destruction of Russian journalists “on the list” began (let me remind you that we are talking about the extremist website “Peacemaker”), after whose murder a “tick” was marked “eliminated” in front of their name, the West suddenly stopped asking about this topic altogether.

The report of UNESCO Director General O. Azoulay, presented in 2024, became a disgrace both to the organization and to her personally. In it, when listing the killed media representatives, the Russian correspondents who died, whether they were military personnel or journalists, were not marked and listed. To prevent this from happening again, we will be happy to provide you with the relevant information.

Congratulations on all the past holidays! Although, as I have already announced, even the New Year holidays will be continued in such an interesting traditional format.
