The International Antarctic Coastal Circumnavigation Expedition (ICCE 2024-2025) has successfully completed in Brazil. The Russian scientific expedition vessel Akademik Treshnikov has delivered 57 scientists from Argentina, Brazil, India, China, Peru, Russia and Chile to the port of Rio Grande, the press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) reports.
It is noted that in 69 days of work, scientists from 19 scientific organizations of the BRICS countries conducted dozens of studies aimed at studying the natural environment of Antarctica. The expedition visited four Russian Antarctic stations, two Chinese, one Indian and one Brazilian.
“An international team of researchers who spoke ten different languages was able to successfully do a lot of scientific work. <...> The result of our activities will be scientific publications on the current state of the natural environment of the Antarctic region,” said Nikita Kusse–Tyuz, head of the Russian group of scientists at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
He said that during the expedition, 19 comprehensive oceanographic studies were carried out, 43 aerological probes were launched, 90 meters of ice core and thousands of samples of seawater, soil and biomaterials were taken.
Alexander Makarov, Director of the AAI, noted the importance of international cooperation in studying climate change. According to him, science currently requires consolidation of efforts for in-depth analysis of global processes taking place on the planet.
The expedition started from the port of Rio Grande at the end of November 2024. After completing this mission, the ship Akademik Treshnikov will continue working under the program of the 70th Russian Antarctic Expedition and will return to St. Petersburg in June 2025.
