On April 12, 2025, the Russian-Brazilian crew will embark on a long voyage under the flags of the BRICS and the Russian Geographical Society. The Brotherhood-2025 circumnavigation expedition will start from Salvador in the Brazilian state of Bahia and return at the end of February 2026. The details of the trip were told by Omsk captain Sergey Shcherbakov at a press conference at the Eurasia Today International Multimedia Center.

The yachtsmen will conduct an expedition on the Fraternidade sailing vessel, which means “Brotherhood” in Portuguese. It was designed by Brazilian Aleixo Belov, who has already made five sailing trips around the world. The yacht is 21.5 meters long and can accommodate up to 12 people.

“Our expedition is dedicated to BRICS. In my opinion, this is the most important association in the world. It includes many countries, including Brazil and Russia, and these states play a key role in international relations,” Belov said, speaking at an online press conference.

The crew will have to travel about 24,000 nautical miles (45,000 kilometers) with calls at the northernmost and southernmost points of the Earth (Cape Chelyuskin and Cape Horn). The route will also pass through the Azores, Iceland, Svalbard and Murmansk.

Captain Shcherbakov has already visited Brazil to get acquainted with the yacht’s design and crew. He said that nine people will sail – a mixed team of Brazilians and Russians. At the same time, the crew will change along the way.

The team will be engaged in scientific and environmental research, as well as making a documentary.

“The very fact of the expedition is a positive political effect for the two countries. I would also like to bring great scientific benefits. <...> I am not a scientist, but this component will be present. What we can measure and record, we will do. Meetings will be held at each port of call where we will communicate with people. One of the main tasks is to reinforce the positive image of Russia,” the Omsk Here news agency, a partner of the TV BRICS network, transmits Shcherbakov’s words.

The captain noted that among the reasons for the unique trip is the approaching 200th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Brazil. According to him, the ship is now almost fully prepared for the cruise: there are still organizational issues, including obtaining permission to pass through the Northern Sea Route.
