A team of restorers from Zhejiang University is restoring tarnished ancient paintings using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. With it, you can analyze the composition of the pigment of the canvas, taking into account the period of its creation and the artist’s style, in order to choose the most accurate color scheme. This is reported by CCTV+, a partner of the TV BRICS network.

It is noted that earlier the restoration of paintings completely depended on the experience of restorers, who analyzed the colors themselves. Now, after completing the visual simulation using AI, specialists manually check the results in the laboratory to ensure maximum accuracy.

Restoring paintings using artificial intelligence significantly speeds up the process. According to CCTV+, more than 100 works of art have already been restored in this way.

Tang Tang, a researcher at Zhejiang University, said that the goal of the researchers is to create an extensive database covering the entire history of Chinese painting, which will allow for even better restoration of paintings in the future.
