An international group of researchers from Russia and India has developed an innovative compound that suppresses ferroptosis, the process of cell death that causes the development of cardiovascular diseases, as well as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. This is reported by the press service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) with reference to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

Scientists have found out that the alkyl derivative of phenothiazine (a substance used to create medicines, including for mental illnesses) It is able to protect cells from destruction caused by ferroptosis. At the same time, the compound does not harm the cells.

“The results of our work open up new prospects for the development of drugs aimed at combating ferroptosis and pathologies associated with this variant of cell death,” said Mikhail Dubinin, lead author of the study, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Microbiology at Mari State University (MarGU).

The antioxidant effect of the new substance was demonstrated on isolated rat liver mitochondria.

The study was conducted by MarSU scientists together with researchers from the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Petrochemistry and Catalysis of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Girijananda Chowdhury University of India.
