On 23 September 2026, the I All-Russian Expert and Practical Conference “Modern Motherhood: Challenges, Resources, Solutions” was held in Moscow. The organizer was the Regional Public Organization “International Women’s Union” (IWU), and the event was conducted by its Department of Social Design and Crisis Intervention. The official information partner of the conference was the online publication “Posolskaya Zhizn” (Embassy Life).

Olga Moroz — founder of the eponymous Clinic of Aesthetic Medicine, member of the Expert Council on Aesthetic Medicine under the Commissioner for the Protection of Entrepreneurs’ Rights of the Moscow Government, member of the Board of the National Association of Healthcare Managers, and author of patented methods for non-surgical facial and body rejuvenation — spoke at the conference as a speaker.

What Olga Moroz Spoke About

Pregnancy and childbirth change not only the usual way of life but also a woman’s body, well-being, and emotional state. Weight, skin and hair condition, muscle tone, and posture may change. Lack of sleep, fatigue, and new daily concerns are added to this.

In such a situation, it is important to talk not only about appearance but also about the quality of life of the mother. At the same time, postpartum recovery should not turn into an obligation to “return to one’s former shape” or to meet someone else’s expectations. Motherhood is not a reason for dissatisfaction with oneself or feelings of guilt.

The Woman Is at the Centre

An integrative approach in aesthetic medicine is comprehensive work centred on the woman: her health, lifestyle, emotional state, and real needs. An aesthetic procedure here is not an end in itself but one of the possible tools — along with medical care, rehabilitation, and psychological support.

Before proposing an intervention, it is important to understand what lies behind the complaint. For example, hair loss may be connected not only to postpartum changes but also to deficiency states or hormonal disorders. Constant fatigue is sometimes explained not only by the burden of caring for a child. And changes in figure may require not a cosmetic intervention but a doctor’s consultation or a gradual return to physical activity.

Therefore, one of the main principles of this approach is interdisciplinarity. Depending on the situation, a woman may need a consultation with an obstetrician-gynaecologist, a general practitioner, an endocrinologist, a dermatologist, a physical rehabilitation specialist, or a psychologist. Of course, not every woman needs to see all specialists at once. What matters is something else: to recognise in time when an aesthetic complaint may be connected to a health condition and, if necessary, to refer the patient to a relevant doctor.

Recovery Is Different for Everyone

The second principle is an individual approach. Postpartum recovery proceeds differently for everyone. It is influenced by the course of pregnancy and childbirth, previous surgeries, chronic diseases, breastfeeding, age, quality of sleep, and the support of loved ones.

Therefore, there can be no universal plan for all women. One may benefit from an aesthetic procedure, another from therapeutic exercise or work on a postoperative scar, and a third from a doctor’s consultation and correction of identified disorders first. Sometimes the most reasonable decision is to give oneself time to recover and not rush into interventions.

Safety and an Honest Conversation

The third principle is safety and clear information. Before making a decision, a woman should know what result can be expected, how long recovery may take, and what contraindications and alternatives exist. A specialist must take into account pregnancy or breastfeeding, concomitant diseases, and medications being taken.

It is also important to avoid promises of a quick and ideal result. After childbirth, the body changes gradually, and not every change can or should be eliminated. The specialist’s task is not to sell an unattainable image but to help the woman make a balanced decision.

Attention to Emotional State

After the birth of a child, a woman may experience fatigue, anxiety, irritation, and self-doubt. Sometimes dissatisfaction with appearance is connected not to a specific problem but to a feeling of being overwhelmed and losing one’s usual footing.

Aesthetic medicine does not replace the help of a psychologist or psychiatrist. If signs of depression, severe anxiety, eating disorders, or a painful fixation on appearance appear, professional psychological help is needed first and foremost.

With a careful and comprehensive approach, aesthetic medicine can become part of caring for a woman — helping to solve a specific problem, feel more confident, and pay closer attention to one’s own condition. But the starting point is always the same: not external standards, but the health, comfort, and needs of the woman herself.

And I hear this from my clients again and again.

We live in an era of high parental standards. Social media, blogs, and expert channels daily show us the portrait of the ideal mother: always calm, always smiling, always knowing the right answer.
She bakes healthy desserts, builds trusting relationships with her child, keeps her voice steady, and still makes it to yoga class. This image is beautiful, but it is far from real life.
And the higher we raise the bar, the harder the fall.
Guilt becomes a constant companion of the modern woman, and it poisons not only her but also, oddly enough, her relationships with her children.

Winnicott’s Wisdom: Permission to Live Without Perfection

The British pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, who devoted thousands of hours to working with mothers and infants, introduced the concept of the “good enough mother” in the mid-twentieth century.
He argued that a child needs a living mother, not a flawless one. One who makes mistakes and notices them. One who responds instantly to every need but sometimes takes a pause.

According to Winnicott, it is precisely the moments when a mother reacts with delay or makes a mistake that give the child invaluable experience: the world is not arranged the way he wants, and this can be survived. That is how resilience is born.
The “perfect” mother is a dangerous figure: she deprives the child of an encounter with disappointment, hinders his independence, and creates anxious attachment.

Winnicott wrote that a mother is good enough precisely to the extent that she meets basic needs, while leaving space for the child to encounter reality. Today we can put it more simply: a child needs a real mother, not a glossy picture.

The Price of Perfectionism: What Happens to Us and Our Children

Modern research only confirms Winnicott’s observations. In 2025, an international survey across 14 countries showed that 85% of mothers experience guilt at least once a week, and 45% — daily. At the same time, women who orient themselves toward the “ideal” image demonstrate 30–40% higher rates of anxiety and depression than those who treat themselves with kindness.

According to a Finnish study (University of Jyväskylä, 2024), it is the perceived pressure of social standards, rather than the actual amount of caregiving, that correlates most strongly with maternal exhaustion.

We burn out from feeling that we are doing too little, not from the actual volume of tasks.

And this affects children.
Research shows that maternal anxiety and chronic guilt are passed on to the child. Children of mothers striving for perfection more often face anxiety — they sense their mother’s fear of making a mistake. And they learn: a mistake is a catastrophe. And therefore they lose the ability to try new things, to take risks, to be spontaneous.

Social Media: A Mirror of Fear

I call the phenomenon of “hunting for the ideal” on social media “diagnosis by picture.”
We scroll through another mother’s photoshopped breakfast, read about her “easy” childbirth, see her child who reads at age two — and compare ourselves.
This comparison always points in one direction: upward, to where things are supposedly “better.” We rarely look at those who have it harder. We always look at those who have it “more perfect.”

Neurobiologically, at that moment, the brain area responsible for social pain is activated. We experience the comparison as a real blow.
And if we do this daily for 15–20 minutes, our nervous system is in constant tension.

A gentle solution: introduce a “digital pause for comparison” — follow those who show difficulties, breakdowns, and ordinary days too. Unfollow channels that make you want to become better at the expense of feeling worthless. And each time ask yourself the main question: “What does MY child need right now?” rather than “What does the ideal mother from my phone do?”

The Practice of the “Good Enough Mother”: How to Become an Ally, Not a Judge

What does a “good enough” mother look like in 2026?
She takes off the mask of perfection.
She:

Acknowledges her mistakes and returns with an apology. If you snapped, come over and say: “I yelled because I was tired. My tiredness is my responsibility. It has nothing to do with you. I love you.” This gives the child a powerful experience: adults make mistakes too, and that is normal. They can admit it and restore connection.

Speaks her needs out loud. “I will drink tea for 15 minutes in silence, and then we will draw together.” When a mother respects her boundaries, the child learns to respect others’. Children whose mothers live fully grow up more empathetic and independent.

Allows herself to be busy and absent for short periods. Winnicott called this “maternal absence in small doses.” Pauses when mother works, reads, or talks on the phone develop the child’s imagination and patience. It is important for him to know that mother will return when he truly calls.

Lets go of the race for early development. Your child is valuable in himself, not for the number of skills. Early development without regard for his living interest is often our anxiety, not his need. Children grow up happy and capable when they are allowed to be children.

How We Help at the IWU: Support Instead of Guilt

At the ROO “International Women’s Union,” we have long observed this picture: women come to us with brilliant résumés and a heavy burden of guilt on their shoulders. We realized: guilt and burnout flourish in silence and isolation. They need light — living conversation, open discussion, professional perspective, and a warm community.

That is precisely why, on September 23, 2026, in Moscow, our Department of Social Design and Crisis Intervention is holding the I All-Russian Conference “Modern Motherhood: Challenges, Resources, Solutions.”

Why is this important right now?
The family always remains the foundation of personality, but today it faces challenges we could not have imagined ten years ago.
A modern mother manages to build a career, take care of herself, raise children (including those with special needs), and remain a pillar of support for the entire family.
How does one maintain balance?
How does one cope with the workload when there are so many expectations around?
How can we build a system where there is room for mom, dad, and children — each in their own way?

Particular attention must be paid to single motherhood. Women are left alone with children, juggling the roles of breadwinner, educator, and psychologist.
How can we help such mothers? How can we create a real, working support system rather than just talking about it?

These questions are especially acute in the context of state policy aimed at strengthening the institution of the family, supporting large families, and preserving traditional values.

We invite to the conference certified psychologists, coaches, mentors, social workers, educators, physicians, NGO representatives, and all helping professionals — practitioners with proven experience who are genuinely committed to making a difference for every family and the nation as a whole.

What awaits participants?
The conference will bring together 10 speakers — 7–10 minute presentations and live discussion where every voice will be heard.
The program includes:

an honest analysis of the challenges of modern motherhood, family, and single motherhood;

best practices: working with single mothers, with complete families, with children with special needs, and involving fathers in upbringing;

an open mic and open discussion — a space where ideas are born;

the formation of a working group of our Department in the direction of “Family, Motherhood and Childhood.”

The official information partner of the conference is the online publication “Embassy Life,” which unites an audience of over 550,000 people.

It is important to us that this conversation goes beyond the professional circle and becomes part of a broad public discussion.

The most valuable thing I see in this project is the opportunity to stop being alone in our questions.
When we gather together, guilt melts away. In its place come clarity, support, and concrete tools. We create a space where every mother can say: “I want to be a good mother, and I have the right to help.” And to receive that help — from professionals and from women just like her.

Dear women, colleagues, mothers.
On behalf of the IWU and personally, I appeal to you: take off the burden of perfection. Your child chose you alive — tired, laughing, sometimes angry, sometimes crying. Allow yourself to be “good enough.” It is to this mother — the one who makes mistakes and continues to love — that children come for advice years later. They come with trust, because they saw: she was real.
That is the highest art of parenting.

When Evgenia Ozarkiv graduated from MGIMO in 2000 with a degree in International Tourism, she could hardly have imagined that in two decades she would be at the head of one of the best spa hotels in the Moscow region. The path from a graduate of a prestigious university to the general manager of the Arthurs SPA Hotel by Mercure is a story of not just career growth, but a true vocation.

After receiving her diploma, Evgenia went to Switzerland to study and train. It was there, in a country with a benchmark service, that she truly understood for the first time: hospitality is not just a profession, it is an art. She started her career in the hotel business in the sales and marketing department of the Moscow Country Club Golf Club. The first years became a school of life: working with VIP guests, understanding the intricacies of premium service, and the ability to hold a punch. In 2010, she became the head of the sales and marketing department of the Aminevskaya Hotel and took an active part in shaping the development strategy of the entire hotel chain. Her talent was noticed and she was entrusted with an ambitious project: the opening of the FOUR ELEMENTS Borodino Club Hotel. Even then, she had the same business acumen and understanding of the market that later led her to success.

Today, Evgenia Ozarkiv is the General Manager of the Arturs SPA Hotel by Mercure. Under her leadership, the hotel has become a leader in the Moscow region market. “For us, every guest is unique. We are happy to give him an emotion, an impression. This is our success,” says Evgenia.

The Arthurs SPA Hotel by Mercure is not just Evgenia’s place of work, but a business in which she has invested her soul and many years of experience. In 2026, the hotel celebrates its 20th anniversary: in two decades, it has gone from a classic country vacation to a multifunctional resort complex with high-class gastronomy, modern SPA and wellness programs, family and corporate events. Since 2021, the hotel has been a member of the Accor international group and operates under the by Mercure brand, combining global standards of service with a unique atmosphere that thousands of guests have loved.

The hotel has one more special feature — it is truly family friendly. Everything is thought out here so that kids, parents, and grandparents can relax together. Cozy studio rooms, spacious terraces, children’s programs, adult spa areas and communal evenings by the fireplace create an atmosphere in which you want to stay longer. It is not surprising that those who have been here with the whole family come back again and again: they are waiting for not just beds and breakfasts, but warm, almost homely care, where traditional family values are not an empty phrase, but daily practice.

And when you look at Eugenia, you realize that this philosophy of the hotel was not born out of thin air. For her, family is the foundation of the foundations. She finds the time and energy to pay attention to her already grown sons, her husband, her beloved sister and, of course, her parents. Family holidays, intimate gatherings at a large table, long conversations are not a “break from work”, but the most important part of her life. And then there is the cottage, a place where Evgenia is happy to pick up a shovel, breathe fresh air and feel the ground under her feet. It is these simple joys that fill her with energy and inspiration. They make up a multi—faceted life, full of vivid emotions. And from them, a real woman is born: a loving mother, a wise wife, and at the same time a highly qualified specialist trusted by hundreds of guests.

A special place in Evgenia’s life is occupied by working with young specialists. She regularly meets with students of RGUTIS and other universities, personally conducts tours of the hotel, shares real career stories and gives invaluable advice. For future managers, these meetings are a chance to see the industry from the inside and understand that hospitality is based not only on standards, but also on love for their work.

The secret of her strength lies in her ability to combine seemingly incompatible things.: be a tough strategist and a sensitive soul, see global trends and keep personal in mind. She creates a space where people feel good, where they come back again and again, where you feel like not just a guest, but part of a big family. And this is perhaps the most accurate definition of true hospitality. And life itself — beautiful, rich, multifaceted. Exactly as Evgenia Ozarkiv creates it.

The IWU side was represented by Alfiya Amirova, President of the “International Women’s Union”; the Editor-in-Chief of the online publication “Embassy Life”; Marat Shakirzyanov; and Anastasia Golyakova — IWU representative, Russian translator, publicist and expert, blogger and host of the English-language channel Think BRICS.

The key topic of the negotiations was the discussion of cooperation between women’s organizations of the two countries, as well as the preparation for the 5th Anniversary International Forum “Woman of the Third Millennium,” which will take place on November 18–19 in Moscow.

A Unique History of Women’s Leadership in Bangladesh

A particularly symbolic meaning was given to the meeting by the fact that Bangladesh is one of the few countries in the world where women have repeatedly held the highest state offices. For more than three decades — from 1991 to 2024 — the country’s political landscape was shaped by two women leaders: Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia.

They alternately led the government, each serving multiple terms as Prime Minister. This period became unique in world politics: Bangladesh remained one of the few countries where women led the state for such an extended period. Their leadership embodied not only political will but also a deep connection to national values — both positioned themselves as successors to their fathers, who gave their lives for the country’s independence.

This historical context makes cooperation with women’s organizations of Bangladesh especially significant. Women’s leadership in this country is not an abstract concept but a living tradition, confirmed by decades of real governance.

Russia-Bangladesh Relations: History and Modernity

Relations between Russia and Bangladesh have deep historical roots. On January 25, 2022, the countries marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Today, the partnership is actively developing in trade, energy, and education. Over 500 students from Bangladesh are studying at Russian universities, and the number of state scholarships for them has been increased.

Invitation to the Anniversary Forum

During the meeting, Alfiya Amirova invited Dr. Shah Mohammad Habibul Hasan and the Bangladeshi delegation to take part in the 5th Anniversary International Forum “Woman of the Third Millennium.” The Forum, which will take place in Moscow in November, will bring together participants from Russian regions and foreign countries, becoming a key platform for the development of women’s entrepreneurship, people’s diplomacy, and cultural exchange.

Interest in the event has already been shown by representatives of several foreign countries and Russian regions. The participation of the Bangladeshi delegation will be an important contribution to the dialogue of cultures and the strengthening of international ties.

“Bangladesh is a country with a unique history of women’s leadership. This is not just a fact but a powerful resource for inspiration and the development of our cooperation. I am confident that joint projects of women from Russia and Bangladesh will open new horizons for public diplomacy,” noted Alfiya Amirova.

The parties agreed on productive cooperation in preparing the Forum and implementing joint initiatives aimed at supporting women’s entrepreneurship, developing cultural exchange, and strengthening humanitarian ties between Russia and Bangladesh.

The event was held with the support of the International Women’s Union

On August 24, 2026, a round table on business etiquette for municipal employees of Bogucharsky District was held in Boguchar. The initiator and organizer of the event was Yulia Kuzmina — entrepreneur, deputy of the City Council of People’s Deputies, and member of the ROO “International Union of Women”.

The event was held with the support of the International Women’s Union and the administration of Bogucharsky District.

Speaker and Program

The main speaker was Natalya Zubkova — Chairman of the Business Ethics Committee of the Voronezh Regional Branch of the All-Russian Public Organization “Opora Rossii”, member of the Association of Etiquette Specialists, and founder of the Voronezh Etiquette Club.

During the round table, the following key aspects of business communication were discussed:

building a communication vector with people of different statuses;

practical examples of relieving psychological tension in business communications;

typical mistakes in business correspondence;

creating a positive tone in business conversation;

maintaining subordination and showing respect to the interlocutor;

etiquette in the digital environment — a relevant aspect in the context of digitalization of local government work.

Special attention was paid to the thesis: “Etiquette does not work without psychology.” According to Natalya Zubkova, the foundation of modern etiquette is a respectful attitude toward people and the competent formation of a respect vector through speech, gestures, etiquette proxemics, and attributes.

As part of the event, participants took an express test on business etiquette, completed a practical task on digital etiquette and drafting a business letter. All participants received personalized certificates.

Participants

The round table was attended by heads and specialists of the administrations of all settlements of Bogucharsky District, as well as heads of structural subdivisions.

Organizational Contribution

Yulia Kuzmina covered all expenses for receiving the main speaker: travel, accommodation, meals, cultural program, and welcome gifts. A coffee break was organized for all participants, and each received her own cosmetic products.

On the Significance of the Event

— I am very glad that we managed to hold such an event in Boguchar. It is important for the development of our district, for creating a comfortable, respectful, and trusting environment in society. After all, every official and deputy is the face of authority for the population, forming general trust in the institution of local self-government. Business etiquette in the municipal sphere is not a whim, but a professional necessity on which effective work is built. Reputation is the main asset for each of us, and knowledge of business etiquette contributes to its proper formation, — noted Yulia Kuzmina.

About Yulia Kuzmina

Yulia Gennadyevna Kuzmina is an entrepreneur, deputy of the Boguchar City Council of People’s Deputies, member of the ROO “International Union of Women”, “Opora Rossii”, the Council for Physical Culture and Sports under the Administration of Bogucharsky District, and the Boguchar Women’s Council.

She was born and raised in Boguchar. She develops several business areas: a clothing and sporting goods store, a cafe, commercial real estate, and her own production of skincare cosmetics. In 2025, Boguchar residents elected her deputy of the City Council of People’s Deputies.

About Boguchar

Boguchar is a town in the south of Voronezh Oblast, standing on the banks of the Bogucharka River. It has a rich history and established traditions of patronage, laid down in the 19th century by Boguchar merchants. The most famous of them was Pyotr Kuranov, thanks to whom the Boguchar Men’s Classical Gymnasium — where Mikhail Sholokhov studied — an almshouse for lonely elderly people, and houses for teachers of the women’s pro-gymnasium were built; streets in the city center were paved, and the beginning of the water supply arrangement was laid.

Today, merchant traditions are continued by local entrepreneurs, one of whom is Yulia Kuzmina.

In a crisis situation, it’s not just about what happened, but also about who, when, in what tone, and in what form they speak about it.

Svetlana Lazareva

In an organization’s reputation history, it’s often not the incident itself that becomes a turning point, but the first phrase spoken after it. A single response to a journalist, an emotional post by a CEO, or a screenshot of internal correspondence can transform a private situation into a public conflict. The actions of an individual employee become perceived as the stance of the entire organization, and the words of a senior executive become a reflection of their values and management culture.

Mistakes, failures, and misunderstandings are inevitable in the operation of any complex system. Therefore, the main question is not whether an organization can completely eliminate crisis situations, but rather how it will respond when a mistake occurs: how quickly it will react, what tone it will choose, and whether it will be able to maintain a unified position and show respect for those affected by the incident.

The connection between reputation and communication is evident. Let’s delve deeper into it.

Let’s start with a simple definition.

Reputation: an opinion confirmed by experience
Reputation is often identified with fame, image or emotional impression. However, reputation is not a fleeting emotion. It is a formed opinion based on the experience of interaction.

It is formed by what a person or organization is thought of, what is said and how they are treated in their absence. It is not only the result of activity that matters, but also the quality of behavior in the process of interaction: consistency, correctness, predictability, ability to comply with agreements and maintain dignity in a difficult situation.

In the past, reputation was formed relatively slowly. It was controlled through the media: information passed through the media outlets, official press services, and professional communities. Often, “unnecessary” information was not allowed to circulate at all. Even if information could not be “contained,” there was a time gap between the event and public reaction, allowing for reflection and positioning.

Today, this time is almost nonexistent.

Today, reputation is formed instantly, spreads uncontrollably, and is destroyed just as quickly, all through communication.

After all, any publication spreads in a matter of minutes.

A comment instantly becomes the subject of discussion. A deleted record continues to exist in the form of screenshots. An internal message can be taken outside the organization and take on a completely different meaning in a new context.

Thus, a single post can trigger an instant public reaction, a single screenshot can leave an eternal reputation mark in the digital space, and a single comment can cause a global crisis.

What do we have?

In the modern world, reputation is no longer just about what you do. Reputation is about WHAT and HOW you say it.

Today, communication is no longer just a tool for interaction between people – a way to exchange information.

It has become a system for managing reputational risks.

Today, reputation is created and destroyed through communication.

Why the reaction is sometimes more important than the initial mistake

Let’s consider two model situations. The air conditioner in the hotel room is not working. The problem is unpleasant, but it is technically solvable. The guest contacts the staff, and in response they hear: “It’s high season, and the technical service is overloaded. Open the window.” What remains in the person’s memory is not the malfunction of the equipment, but the indifference towards their situation.

This can lead to a refusal to return and a negative review, with a reputational cost that exceeds the cost of repairs.

Another situation is more serious: an airline loses the luggage of a passenger who is on their way to an important meeting. However, the staff immediately recognizes the problem, apologizes, explains the procedure, regularly reports on the progress of the search and offers practical assistance. The client is uncomfortable, but sees that the organization has not left him alone with the problem.

In this particular case, the client not only remained loyal, but also began to recommend the company to others.

Thus, the scale of a company’s reputational and financial losses is not always determined by the scale of the initial error.

Often, the decisive factor is the reaction of the organization, or rather, the communication of its employees.

And as practice shows, people are willing to forgive mistakes.

But they do not forgive arrogance, indifference, attempts to shift responsibility and refusal to engage in human dialogue.

I suggest that we consider a few more situations on the example of large federal companies.

The Aeroflot case
An illustrative example of how a private incident becomes a nationwide story was the story of passenger Mikhail Galin and his cat Viktor in 2019. The animal’s weight exceeded the airline’s established limit for carriage in the cabin. The passenger (in order not to put the pet in the baggage compartment) replaced the cat at the control weighing, and carried his own into the cabin of the plane, after which he publicly reported the incident on his social media. The post was instantly “viralized” and became public knowledge, turning a private incident into a federal-level incident. Following an internal investigation, Aeroflot removed the user from its loyalty program, canceled nearly 400,000 accumulated miles, and closed the bonus account.

From a regulatory perspective, the company cited the user’s intentional violation of the transportation terms. However, a significant portion of the audience perceived the sanction as overly harsh. In the public discussion, the focus quickly shifted from the animal’s weight and safety requirements to the proportionality of the punishment, the company’s concern, and its “humanity.” The story gained significant attention, leading to discussions in the State Duma and the Ministry of Transport regarding the need to amend the animal transportation regulations.

This case does not suggest that regulations should be abolished solely based on public opinion. On the contrary, a large organization has a responsibility to comply with regulations, especially when it comes to safety. However, public legitimacy goes beyond the legal basis of a decision. The audience also evaluates its proportionality, the tone of the explanation, and the organization’s ability to take into account the human context.

Where did the reputational risk arise? In the tone of communication: where the logic of regulation came into conflict with the logic of perception.

If the company speaks exclusively the language of violation and punishment, and the audience speaks the language of care and justice, a formally accurate answer may not reduce tension, but increase it.

Sometimes ill-considered words and actions undermine trust, which means they have “unpleasant” consequences.

The company chose a formal, cold tone, and preferred a defensive position instead of a dialogue.

The result: public outcry, reduced customer loyalty.

CASE STUDY: Tinkoff Bank and Oleg Tinkov

Everyone knows that Tinkoff Bank has been building its brand for a long time through

the personal brand of its founder.

Oleg Tinkov used direct communication with the bank’s clients, an open and bold style. This became its competitive advantage and allowed the bank to gain high recognition.

The new brand was quickly perceived as “alive” and honest.

However, over time, in interviews and social media, Oleg Tinkov began to engage in public criticism, sarcasm, emotional reactions, harsh responses, and harsh comments towards customers.

The audience sensed the aggression, and the consequences were swift and severe: the brand rapidly lost its position and credibility.

In 2017, after the release of a critical video by the YouTube channel Nemagia, Tinkoff Bank filed a lawsuit in court to protect its business reputation and seek damages of 500,000 rubles. Subsequently, the bank and Oleg Tinkov dropped their lawsuits, and the case was dismissed. The conflict quickly escalated beyond legal proceedings, sparking widespread public outrage, and leading to the suspension of cooperation by several of the bank’s partners. The lawsuits were later withdrawn.

This example shows an important pattern: the more strongly a brand is linked to the personality of a leader, the higher the requirements for his public speech.

The manager may consider that he expresses a personal opinion. However, the audience often perceives his words as the official position of the organization.

The point of this example is not to evaluate the correctness of one of the parties. It shows how difficult it is to separate a company’s reputation from that of its public leader if the brand has been built around his personality for a long time. A leader may believe that they are expressing a personal opinion, but the audience often perceives their words as the official position of the organization.

In the government and diplomatic environment, this pattern is even more pronounced. The higher the status of the speaker, the less space there is for “personal” communication.

The words of a first-level official are seen as an institutional signal, reflecting their attitude towards partners, society, the government, and the professional community.

In the diplomatic and international arena, the consequences of inaccuracy are particularly severe. A careless word can be perceived as a change in the department’s position, a lack of consistency as a lack of unity, and an incorrect choice of form as a deliberate display of disrespect.

Here, it is not only the content of the phrase that matters, but also its context: the speaker’s status, the setting, the moment of utterance, the availability of translation, the national characteristics of speech etiquette, and cultural perceptions of the acceptable degree of directness.

A phrase that may sound neutral and businesslike in one culture may be perceived as categorical, cold, or demeaning in another.

An additional risk is created by the digital environment. A message addressed to a limited number of people may end up in front of an international audience; a translation can make the original wording more harsh; a quote can lose its reservations and context.

Therefore, a public statement should be evaluated not only in full

But there are four main factors that can help an organization maintain trust in a difficult situation.

Speed of response

Silence is often perceived as confusion, indifference, or an indirect admission of guilt. A long delay allows other people’s interpretations to take over the information space.

However, speed should not be interpreted as impulsiveness.

The first response can be brief, indicating that the organization is aware of the situation, is verifying the circumstances, and will provide a timeframe for the next communication. This is preferable to making a hasty statement that may need to be refuted later.

Tone of communication
The audience evaluates not only the words, but also the attitude behind them.

A defensive, accusatory, or arrogant tone increases tension. A calm and respectful tone, on the other hand, shows that the organization maintains control and is aware of the consequences of what happened.

Empathy does not mean giving up one’s position. It means acknowledging that the other party has reason to feel anxious, disappointed, or dissatisfied.

A unified position

Different versions of the event coming from the head, the press service and the employees immediately create mistrust.

Before a public statement, it is necessary to determine:

who is authorized to speak on behalf of the organization;
which facts have already been confirmed;
what is still being checked;
which formulations are common to all representatives;
when the next information will be provided.

A unified position creates a sense of stability even in an unstable situation.

The personality of the leader

The first person is not just an official. For the external audience, it becomes the embodiment of the organization.

The leader’s calmness is perceived as the stability of the system.

Their confusion is seen as a lack of control.

Aggression is considered a corporate norm. The ability to admit mistakes is seen as a sign of strength and maturity.

These four factors – speed, tone, unified position, and leader behavior – form the foundation of reputational stability.

These factors are interconnected.

A quick response without verified facts is dangerous; the right words spoken in a cold tone may be rejected; a unified position loses its power if the first person publicly contradicts it.

I offer you a five-step model for an anti-crisis response.

In a difficult situation, it is useful to build a message based on the following sequence: recognition – empathy – responsibility – action – control.

It follows the generally accepted principles of crisis communication: to communicate in a timely and accurate manner, to maintain trust, to express empathy, to offer action, and to demonstrate respect for the audience.

Confession

To show that the organization sees the problem and is not trying to pretend that nothing has happened: “We are aware of the situation and are carefully reviewing the circumstances.”

Empathy

To acknowledge the consequences for people: “We understand the inconvenience, anxiety, or disappointment this has caused.”

Responsibility

If the facts are confirmed, clearly state the responsibility. If the investigation is ongoing, inform the public about who is conducting it and when the results will be presented.

Action

Explain what has already been done: contacting the participants, resolving the immediate issue, changing the workflow, and initiating an internal review.

Control

Name the next step and the deadline for a new message: “We will provide updated information no later than…”.

An example of a neutral first reaction: “We are aware of the incident and are investigating all the circumstances. We understand that the situation has caused concern and questions. We have already contacted the participants and are taking the necessary measures. We will provide confirmed information and further decisions by 6 p.m.”

Such a message does not replace the investigation and does not contain premature conclusions, but it shows that the organization is present in the situation, understands its human dimension, and maintains control over the information process.

What to check before making a public statement

Before publishing an official comment, it is useful for the CEO, press service, and protocol team to answer the following questions together:

What is known for certain, and what remains a speculation?
Who has been affected by the situation, and what emotions has it caused?
Is the tone and content of the response appropriate for the scale of the incident?
Doesn’t the text sound like an attempt to defend, blame, or shift responsibility?
Does the position of the head coincide with the position of the press service and other representatives of the organization?
Is it clear what actions have already been taken and when a new message will follow?
Do protocol actions contradict the words?: the composition of the participants, the order of the speeches, the place, time and format of the statement?
What would a single phrase look like if it were taken out of context and placed in the title?
Would the wording acquire an undesirable meaning in translation or in a different cultural environment?

The last three questions are especially important for government, diplomatic, and international communication.

A public message exists not only in the author’s intention, but also in a multitude of subsequent interpretations.

The task of a professional team is to anticipate the most likely ones in advance.

Reputation is tested at the moment of error.

An organization is not capable of controlling all publications, comments, actions of journalists, and reactions of social networks. But it is obliged to control its own communication: facts, tone, consistency, form, and behavior of authorized persons.

Reputation is not just about what people say about a person or company during a period of success. It is especially evident in how they respond when faced with criticism, mistakes, or public discontent. This is where it becomes clear whether a leader can maintain their dignity, listen to the other side, take responsibility, and maintain trust.

Reputation resilience is not about avoiding mistakes. It is about responding to them in a predictable manner. The winners are not those who never make mistakes (there are no such people), but those who know how to speak and act professionally, timely, and humanly when they make mistakes.

The cost of a mistake is not only determined by what happened. It is also determined by how it was communicated.

This leads to the following conclusion:

In today’s world, reputation is not just about past actions. It is also about current communication.

Svetlana Lazareva is an expert in business etiquette and effective communication, and a member of the National Association of Protocol Specialists. She is the author of educational programs for managers, business representatives, government agencies, and professional communities. Her main areas of expertise include impression management and reputation management, status communication, business etiquette, negotiations, and public speaking.
