On December 1, a webinar hosted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Parliamentarians for Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Abolition, Youth Fusion, a global networking platform, and the World Future Council. The webinar was the sixth in a series of international parliamentary events focused on disarmament for security and sustainable development.

Representatives of international organizations, public associations, youth associations, and experts dealing with disarmament and non-proliferation issues participated in the webinar.

During the discussion, participants shared their own experiences and activities of their organizations in empowering women, the need to legislate practices that take into account women’s interests in disarmament and ensure gender equality in negotiations during peaceful settlements of conflicts. The need for a comprehensive study of the impact of nuclear weapons testing on women’s reproductive health and the key role of parliamentarians in the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation process were highlighted.

According to the participants of the event, more efforts should be made, including at the level of inter-parliamentary cooperation, to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace and Security,” adopted in 2000. The document demands preventing violations of women’s rights, supporting their participation in peace negotiations and in post-conflict reconstruction, and protecting women and girls from sexual violence during war.

Maria Tikhotskaya and Anastasia Kozlova of the Expert Analytical Department of the Secretariat of the Council of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly took part in the webinar as observers.
