Gohar Barseghyan: “Regional integration is an important factor of economic stability and sustainable growth”

Director of the Integration Development Department of the Eurasian Economic Commission Gohar Barseghyan stated this at the round table “Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Opportunities for regional economic integration” within the framework of the 6th Istanbul Economic Summit, held on December 8.

“Ensuring sustainable economic development is increasingly associated by states in different regions of the world with integration mechanisms,” the representative of the EEC noted, “while the effects of participation in the integration association become particularly noticeable during crisis periods for the world economy.”

Gohar Barseghyan spoke about the results of the two-year implementation of Strategic Directions for the Development of the Eurasian Economic Integration until 2025. This document expanded the horizons of the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union and proposed measures and mechanisms for the development and deepening of integration processes, including the implementation of anti-crisis mechanisms.

The document includes a list of measures aimed at the development of high-tech and innovative Eurasian space. It covers not only the current integration agenda of the Union, but also new areas of economic cooperation, including education and science, healthcare, tourism and sports.

Speaking about the international agenda, Gohar Barseghyan informed about the active participation of the Commission in the implementation of global initiatives of the Union’s partners, such as, for example, the Chinese initiative “One Belt, One Road”, and also informed that the created infrastructure of the international activities of the EAEU allows considering the Union’s participation in the implementation of other initiatives announced in Eurasia and aimed at for mutually beneficial development of trade and economic cooperation. First of all, this is the implementation of the concept of the Great Eurasian Partnership.

“The concept of the Greater Eurasian Partnership implies the synergy of national economies and regional strategies for accelerated economic development. The implementation of this concept will be based on a system of bilateral and multilateral agreements in various areas of cooperation. Undoubtedly, the EAEU with its wide network of international contacts will play a significant role in the implementation of this concept,” said the Director of the EEC Integration Development Department.
