China called the WTO decision on the US tariff case “objective and fair”

China welcomes the decision of the World Trade Organization (WTO) that US tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum products violate the rules of the organization, Xinhua reports, citing the Ministry of Commerce. On December 9, a three-person panel said that the US measures were incompatible with WTO rules. The findings were made public in cases initiated by China, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. Cases from India and Russia are still pending. In 2018, President Donald Trump imposed duties of 25% on steel imports and 10% on aluminum from several countries and territories, including Hong Kong. The US used section 232 of the 1962 law, which allows the president to restrict imports if they threaten national security. The US has already stated that it strongly rejects the “erroneous” interpretation and conclusions of the commission. “We are not going to cancel Section 232 duties as a result of these disputes,” Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Adam Hodge said in a statement. It also highlights the need for WTO arbitration reform.
