The Talchum, a Korean traditional masked dance, has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. This decision was made at the 17th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which was held in Rabat (Morocco) from November 28 to December 3. In total, 47 elements were included in the lists of intangible cultural heritage, represented by 60 countries.

Thalchhum (“thal” – mask, “chhum” – dance, 탈춤) is a performing art that includes not only dance, but also theatrical performance. The main themes of the talchum include the expulsion of evil spirits, ridiculing the elite of the upper class, pointing out the absurdity of patriarchal society and depicting the joys and sorrows of ordinary people. The audience usually reacts violently to the development of the plot, then applauding the actors, then booing them and can always join the dance.

From North Korea, cold noodles “Renmen” (in South Korea – “Nanmen”) were added to the UNESCO list.

All over Korea, work is underway to discover, study and preserve intangible cultural heritage with the involvement of the broad masses of the people.
