Russia and Uruguay are united by long-standing historical ties. The establishment of diplomatic relations between the Eastern Republic of Uruguay and the Russian Empire took place through the exchange of letters of introduction (September 9, 1857) and letters of reply (December 10, 1857) between the President of Uruguay Gabriel Pereira and Emperor Alexander II. Before that, Russia in the south of the New World had relations only with a related monarchy – the Brazilian Empire. Thanks to the initiative of the Uruguayans, the establishment of relations between the Russian crown and the republics of Latin America began.

Suspended in 1917, Uruguay’s diplomatic relations with our country were resumed in 1926. In 1935, they were interrupted by the Uruguayan side and then restored again in 1943. However, the noticeable development of bilateral contacts in various fields of activity began only half a century later – from the 90s of the twentieth century.

The basis of cooperation is the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, signed in 1997.

The Russian Foreign Ministry notes that “… over the past years, it has been possible to create a solid foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation both in the bilateral format and in international affairs. Russia and Uruguay are bound by time-tested ties of friendship and mutual trust.”

In an interview for the magazine “International Life”, Ambassador of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay Daniel Castillos Gomez noted: “Our relations have been truly humanitarian and humane for many years. And they are at a very good level. I have been working as the Ambassador of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay to the Russian Federation since the end of June 2021. And my priority, the main task was and remains to strengthen and develop trade and economic cooperation between our countries.”

Questions were raised about trade and economic relations, cooperation with Russian organizations in the field of science and technology, logistics and tourism.

“I believe that we will be able to move forward in our cooperation with Russia in many areas, including in the scientific field, which we really want. I also believe that Uruguay and Russia will be able to solve many problems in the trade and economic field and master new convenient logistics ways of interaction. We will actively promote our national culture in Russia, and Russia its own in Uruguay. And it will definitely be. Together we will achieve everything,” said Daniel Castillos, Uruguay’s Ambassador to Russia.
