After 28 months, the construction of the tunnel under the Yangtze River, which is a key project for controlling the gas pipeline, was completed, PipeChina said. The tunnel has a length of 10,226 km and is designed with three gas pipelines with a diameter of 1,422 mm each.

The construction of a key section on the eastern route of the Russia-China gas pipeline has been completed, which will allow Russian gas to cross the Yangtze River and reach Shanghai, the Global Times reports.

After 28 months, the construction of the tunnel under the Yangtze River, which is a key project for controlling the gas pipeline, was completed, PipeChina said. The tunnel has a length of 10,226 km and is designed with three gas pipelines with a diameter of 1,422 mm each.

“This project is a successful example of mutual benefit and mutually beneficial international cooperation and combines the advantages of Russia’s rich resources with China’s vast market,” said Lin Boqiang, director of the Center for Economics and Energy Research at Xiamen University.

The length of the gas pipeline is more than 8000 km, including a 3000-kilometer section in Russia and a 5111-kilometer section in China. The northern section from Heihe, northeastern Heilongjiang Province, to Changling, Jilin Province, was commissioned in 2019. The middle section, from Changlin to Yongqing in North China’s Hebei Province, began operating in 2020.

Starting in 2024, the pipeline will supply China with 38 billion cubic meters of gas annually in accordance with a 30-year contract worth $400 billion — as part of an agreement signed in May 2014 between the China National Petroleum Corporation and Gazprom.

China is Russia’s leading trading partner. In January-October 2022, the volume of mutual trade increased by 27% (compared to the same period in 2021) — up to $ 143 billion, explained in the office of the Government of the Russian Federation. The growth of trade turnover in 2021 amounted to 35% — up to $140.7 billion.
