As a result of the operations, 7 Chinese citizens were rescued, taken hostage for ransom by armed gangs in the Nigerian state of Kaduna, Sputnik Turkiye reports.
Kaduna State Commissioner of Internal Security and Internal Affairs Samuel Arowan said that the military is conducting air and ground operations against armed gang members in the Birnin Gwari area.
Aravan noted that during the operations, 7 Chinese were rescued, whom armed gang members took hostage for ransom.
Quoting that those rescued were taken to hospital for health checks, Aruvan stated that “it is assumed that the Chinese were abducted by armed gang members while working at the mine in June 2022.”
In Nigeria, kidnapping is punishable by death, but despite this, kidnappings for ransom are common.
The payment of the ransom was banned as part of the fight against the growing security problems in the country.
