The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims of the explosion of a fuel tanker in the Salang tunnel

Uzbekistan, Tashkent – AN Podrobno.uz The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan expressed condolences in connection with the numerous victims after the explosion of a fuel tanker in the Salang tunnel in Afghanistan, the correspondent reports Podrobno.uz .

“With a feeling of deep sorrow, we received the message about the numerous victims in the Salang tunnel as a result of the explosion of a fuel tanker. We express our deep condolences to the families and friends of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Recall that as a result of the explosion of a fuel tanker in the Salang tunnel connecting the northern provinces of Afghanistan with the capital Kabul, 19 people were killed and 32 others were injured. As the press secretary of the administration of the governor of the province of Parwan, Said Himatullah Shamim, told reporters, the explosion occurred on the night from Saturday to Sunday.

According to him, there are women and children among the dead, many are still blocked in the tunnel, the number of victims may increase. The explosion occurred as a result of the fact that the tanker overturned, he said.

The representative of the Ministry of Public Works under the interim government of the Taliban movement, Mevlevi Hamidullah Misbah, said that as a result of the explosion, many cars burned down.

Eyewitnesses report that the passage to the tunnel, where hundreds of people still remain, is blocked.

The Salang tunnel is located at an altitude of over 3.2 thousand meters above sea level, in the area of the pass of the same name in the Hindu Kush mountains. The length of the tunnel together with the exit galleries is 3.6 kilometers, the width of the roadway is 6 meters. The structure was built in 1958-1964 by Soviet specialists, mainly Moscow metro builders.

The tunnel is the only highway connecting Kabul with the northern provinces of Afghanistan. During the civil war between the Northern Alliance and the Taliban, the tunnel was blown up, and in 2002, after the unification of the country, it was reopened.
