The “Eurasian Tunnel” connecting the Asian and European parts of Istanbul has been used by 97 million vehicles over 6 years of operation (since December 20, 2016). This was announced by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey Adil Karaismayiloglu.

The head of the Ministry of Transport stressed that the “Eurasian Tunnel” is the only two-storey highway of its kind in the world connecting two continents.

The 14.5 km long tunnel connects the Asian and European parts of Istanbul between the Geztepe and Kazlycheshme districts. At least 5 km of this road are laid directly under the Istanbul Strait (Bosphorus) at a depth of 106 meters from sea level.

“The highways are laid one above the other, and the tunnel is designed to withstand earthquakes, tsunamis and soil pressure with a large margin,” Karaismayiloglu said.

According to the head of the Ministry of Transport, the construction of the tunnel was carried out for 3 years and 11 months, and the road itself was opened eight months earlier than planned. The project cost $1.2 billion.
