Israeli Ambassador to Azerbaijan lit the first Hanukkah candle in Krasnaya Sloboda

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel to Azerbaijan George Dick visited the village of Krasnaya Sloboda in Guba, where he took part in the ceremony of lighting the first Hanukkah candle in an eight-candle holder in the synagogue, the STMEGI information portal reports.

The director of the Museum of Mountain Jews Igor Shaulov and members of the community of Mountain Jews also took part in the solemn ceremony of lighting the first Hanukkah candle.

“There are places that I must definitely visit in connection with my work. But this is the place where I come with love, I come as to my home. Today we are gathered here to start celebrating the holiday of light, the holiday of good – Hanukkah,” the ambassador said.

He congratulated the members of the community on the holiday, wishing them the blessings of the Almighty, good health, family happiness and well-being. The Ambassador also expressed gratitude to the community leaders. “They are doing a serious, huge job preserving Jewish society. I also want to express my gratitude to every member of the community who contributes to the preservation of Jewish heritage and makes me feel at home,” George Dick stressed.

The community of mountain Jews has been living in Krasnaya Sloboda for two thousand years, it is the only community of mountain Jews in the CIS.
