Comment by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, M.V. Zakharova, in connection with the plans to hold the Central Asia–Japan ministerial meeting in Tokyo

As follows from the incoming reports, including from the official website of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, on December 24 this year, an in–person meeting of the Central Asia-Japan dialogue at the level of foreign ministers is scheduled to be held in Tokyo.

We respect the intention of our Central Asian neighbors to develop cooperation with the Asia-Pacific states, using their potential to solve socio-economic problems. However, they could not help but pay attention to the goals that the official Tokyo itself declares in relation to this event. Judging by the rhetoric of the Japanese leaders at the stage of its preparation, they are interested not so much in mutually beneficial cooperation as, as stated, “rallying the world community, including the Central Asian countries, against Russia.”

In practice, Tokyo’s economic policy towards the Central Asian states, apparently commissioned by Washington, has long been aimed at undermining the extensive economic ties with the Russian Federation that have been formed for many years. It seems that having lost the opportunity to pursue an independent policy and having completely switched to serving other people’s interests, Japan is seeking to impose the same role on other countries in order to strengthen comprehensive pressure on Russia.

In this regard, I would like to recall the politician and diplomat, the classic of Central Asian, Russian and world literature Chingiz Aitmatov. He dedicated his first story in 1952 to post-war Japan. The young writer was struck by the fact that years after the end of the war, the country was completely dependent on the United States. In the mouth of his hero – a boy selling newspapers who is facing the arbitrariness of the occupation authorities – he put a sincere call for the liberation of the Japanese from the American yoke. But, unfortunately, even after 70 years, this reality has not changed.
