The musical art of Belarus originates in the folk music of the Eastern Slavs.

Instrumental performance has long played a significant role in the life of the Belarusian village. Among the favorite folk instruments are duda, zhaleika, horn, lyre, violin, cymbals.

Church liturgical music has been greatly developed in Belarus. The monuments of the XV-XVII centuries are collections of vocal and instrumental works “Polotsk notebook” and “Chimes”.

In the XVIII century, the centers of musical culture became private theaters and chapels of magnates Radziwills, Sapieha, Oginsky and others. Among the famous composers are J. Holland, E. Vanjura, M. Radziwill.

In modern Belarus, the creativity of the country’s leading musical groups is very popular: the Presidential Orchestra of the Republic of Belarus, the State Academic Symphony Orchestra, the State Academic Choral Chapel named after G.Shirma.

The artists of the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater of Belarus, the Belarusian State Academic Musical Theater, the Belarusian State Philharmonic conquer both Belarusians and numerous viewers abroad with their original talent and the highest performing skills.

The Belarusian musical art was glorified by outstanding composers S.Monyushko, G.Wagner, V.Mulyavin, I.Luchenok, E.Hanok, D.Smolsky, O.Eliseenkov and others.

The National Academic Orchestra of Symphonic and Pop Music under the direction of Mikhail Finberg plays a significant role in the development of musical culture. The organization of chamber music festivals in small towns of Belarus is one of the most important activities of the orchestra.

The business cards of Belarus can rightfully be considered the vocal group “Pure Voice”, the ensembles “Pesnyary” and “Syabry”.

Every year, 60 festivals of international and national levels are held in Belarus, 30 of them are musical. The largest of them, such as “Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk”, the National Festival of Belarusian song and Poetry “Maladzechna”, “Belarusian musical Autumn”, “Minsk Spring”, the holiday “Kupala” (“Alexandria gathers friends”). The International Festival of Arts “Slavianski Bazaar” is the main cultural event of the year. For more than a quarter of a century, this largest forum has been held on the ancient Vitebsk land under the patronage of the President of Belarus and welcomes guests from all continents. During this time, tens of thousands of participants from more than 100 countries have visited Chagall’s homeland. In the Summer Amphitheater, on the main stage of the festival, hundreds of concerts were held, which millions of viewers of the planet managed to watch.
In the city above the Dvina, world stars and debutants gather annually in July. The noble task of the “Slavic Bazaar” is formulated in its motto: “Through art – to peace and mutual understanding.” The same name is given to the special prize of the President of the Republic of Belarus, which is awarded at the festival.

The holiday “Kupala” in the agro-town of Alexandria dates back to 2011. Every year at the beginning of July, “Alexandria gathers friends” for large-scale summer folk festivals in the homeland of the President – in the Shklovsky district of the Mogilev region. All events take place on the banks of the Dnieper River. The holiday, reflecting the development of Kupala traditions, is based on cultural exchange between different states. Alexandria welcomes guests from Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, and the geography of the holiday is expanding from year to year. Among the participants are folk art collectives and masters of decorative and applied art. The trade rows of the fair with original souvenirs and national dishes stretch for several kilometers along the picturesque coast of the Dnieper.

The Festival of National Cultures in Grodno is a unique festival whose history began in 1996. It has become not only the hallmark of the city, but also one of the leading cultural and tourist brands of the country. Traditionally, every two years, the creative forum, which has no analogues in the world in its format, brings together representatives of ethnic groups from different regions of Belarus. The main idea remains unchanged – to preserve national identity, while strengthening unity and friendship. On the first weekend of June, the festival gathers about 1 thousand artists representing about 40 nations of the world. For two days, the historical center of Grodno turns into a large-scale art venue, where national farmsteads, artists’ workshops, photo zones, fashion shows with demonstrations of folk costumes, dance workshops and a sports tournament that introduces guests to traditional games of the peoples of the world.
