Ecological, gastronomic, and industrial tourism are popular today. And this line is constantly expanding. In particular, genealogical tourism has appeared among the new trends. The concept was developed by the director of the Institute of Social Memory of the Academy of Military Sciences of the Russian Federation, Associate Professor of MGIMO Alexander Uzhanov.
“Our institute has raised the issue of developing a culture of the so-called root man. That is, to implement the concept of family stories, the construction of family trees,” Uzhanov said.
In his opinion, every person sooner or later thinks about his origin, his roots, and strives to learn more about the history of his family. At the first stage, he searches for information in the archives, at the second, he strives to visit the places where his ancestors lived. Uzhanov said that several such tours have already been organized in test mode.
“Therefore, the industry could provide interesting tourist offers here. And the most important thing is to provide infrastructure and service services to that, I am sure, a fairly large flow of citizens, both in the post-Soviet space and in general around the world, who are concerned about finding their roots,” Uzhanov said.
The proposal for the development of genealogical tourism was supported by the Vice-President of the Russian Union of Travel Industry Yuri Barzykin.
“This is quite an interesting direction. I think this topic should definitely be considered at the Congress to be held in Minsk in February next year. That is, we have already worked out proposals, worked out transport logistics,” Barzykin said.
Pavel Sapotko, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Minsk City branch of the Belarusian Peace Foundation, expressed the opinion that this direction can become an integral part of patriotic or memorial tourism.

“For example, the territory of Belarus was liberated in 1944 by units formed in different Union republics. Today, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Victory soldiers want to walk the same roads where their ancestors fought. This is also a new direction of tourism development,” Sapotko said.
The participants of the video bridge agreed that new tourism destinations are especially relevant today. Preserving historical memory is a strategic task. Therefore, it is necessary to work out new directions within the framework of public-private partnership.
