Hydrogen on a new domestic electrolyzer was produced at the Kola NPP. This was announced on Monday by the press service of the Rosatom State Corporation.

“At the Kola NPP, a new electrolysis plant of domestic assembly produced the first hydrogen, which is necessary for cooling turbine generators that generate electricity at a nuclear power plant,” the report says. It is noted that hydrogen is produced using the latest technology, which is being used on an industrial scale for the first time at the Rosenergoatom concern NPP site (part of Rosatom’s electric power division). The advantage of the new electrolysis plant is the safety and purity of products. It produces hydrogen with a purity of 99.999%, and the operation of the installation is monitored using hydrogen monitoring sensors that respond to exceeding the set parameters, as well as fire extinguishing and ventilation systems.

“Today, Russia is stepping up work to create a high-tech foundation in all spheres of life. Hydrogen energy is one of the priority directions of scientific and technological development of the Rosatom State Corporation. We believe that this pilot plant will prove itself, and in the future the Kola NPP will start producing pure hydrogen on the necessary industrial scale,” the words of the chief engineer of the Kola NPP Vladimir Matveev are quoted in the message.

The Kola NPP has become a pilot site for hydrogen production in Russia thanks to the experience of handling: turbo generators at this station have always been cooled with hydrogen. The project to create a bench test facility for the production of hydrogen is planned for 2025.
