China has successfully tested the world’s first space telescope with a “lobster eye”

At an altitude of 500 km above the Earth, the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA) telescope took high-quality X-ray images, including the center of the galaxy, the Magellanic clouds and the constellation Scorpio. LEIA was launched on July 27 from the Taiyuan Cosmodrome in Shanxi Province. X-rays are difficult to reflect and focus because of their high penetrating power. Therefore, scientists use a technology that resembles the structure of the eyes of crustaceans (lobster eye), which see well in a dark environment under water.

Now LEIA technology will be used on the Einstein Probe, a larger telescope that is being developed by Chinese and European scientists. It is planned to be sent into orbit at the end of 2023. It is expected that the Einstein probe will detect weak or distant high-energy cosmic events for the first time, and will also allow us to study supermassive black holes in the centers of most galaxies. The European Space Agency and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany provided equipment for the mission worth 780 million yuan ($111.6 million).
