India plans to give Syria loans of $280 million for the construction of a steel mill, a power plant and an educational center.

Representatives of India made this initiative at a regular meeting of the UN Security Council devoted to the socio-political situation in Syria. The relations between these countries have noticeably strengthened over the past year. Indian universities accept Syrian students and train specialists for the development of the industrial sector.

Syria is in a state of humanitarian crisis, exists under economic sanctions and has been involved in a military conflict for more than a year, but its metallurgical industry continues to work even despite problems with raw materials and electricity. Due to the difficult situation in the country, accurate estimates of the Syrian metallurgy are practically not published, but experts estimate its production capacity at several million tons per year.
