The World Banana Forum (WBF) organized the first African Regional Commission in cooperation with Afruibana. This webinar brought together the main players of the African banana industry and laid the foundation for a fruitful dialogue on issues of shared responsibility and the duty of caution.

During this webinar, Joseph Owon Kono, President of the association, was accompanied by representatives of three producing countries, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Ghana.

He also shared his vision of the market and spoke about the efforts and initiatives that have been taken by manufacturers in recent years in the field of social, social and environmental policy.

Afruibana started by reminding how the African banana sector contributes to improving the living conditions of workers, their families and local communities. Its members develop infrastructure for access to basic services (water, education, healthcare, housing, etc.), and also contribute to the development of the local economic fabric by stimulating agricultural entrepreneurship. Similarly, initiatives are currently being implemented to change gender parity in management structures.

The World Banana Forum (WWF) is a platform for cooperation between the main participants in the global banana production and marketing chain to achieve an industry–wide consensus on best practices for sustainable production and trade. We are confident that cooperation is the key to change.

Afruibana welcomed the participation of trade union representatives from the three producing countries in coordinating the activities of the African Regional Commission. This approach is part of an expansion of active commitment on the part of both manufacturing companies and trade union representatives who act daily to promote dialogue.

The VBF unites retailers, importers, producers, exporters, consumer associations, governments, research institutes, trade unions and civil society organizations and helps them in finding rational ways to improve the situation in the banana industry.

The task of the World Banana Forum is as follows:

encouraging the cooperation of stakeholders to develop a rational approach to improving the situation in the banana industry; and
achieving an industry-wide consensus on best practices in addressing labor issues, as well as issues related to gender inequality, environmental impacts, sustainable production and the economy.

*Afruibana is a pan-African Association of Producers and Exporters of African Fruits.
